About the Hawker Tempest Mk.V

Evolving from the troubled Typhoon programme, the Tempest V addressed the Typhoon's high-altitude limitations with a redesigned laminar-flow wing — thinner, faster, and with a more elliptical trailing edge optimised for speed. Making its maiden flight on 2 September 1942, the Tempest posted an impressive 477 mph in level flight, catching the attention of the Air Ministry immediately.

Entering RAF service in early 1944, the Tempest V quickly proved its worth. As the fastest Allied fighter at low and medium altitudes, it was tasked with intercepting V-1 flying bombs during the Doodlebug campaign — destroying hundreds before they could reach British cities. Squadron Leader Joseph Berry alone claimed 61 V-1 kills flying the Tempest.

With the V-1 threat contained, Tempest squadrons pushed into occupied Europe on aggressive seek-and-destroy missions. So feared was the Tempest that Messerschmitt Me262 jet pilots — particularly vulnerable during takeoff and landing — reportedly dreaded encountering it. Pilots who flew both the Typhoon and Tempest described the difference as comparing a cart horse to a racehorse.
