Airfix

Airfix is a brand of scale plastic models that has been popular among hobbyists since the 1950s. The company was founded by Nicholas Kove, a Hungarian immigrant who settled in London after World War II. Kove initially established a company called "Air Lines" in 1939, which produced plastic models of aircraft and ships for the mass market. However, the company was forced to close during the war due to a shortage of plastic.

After the war, Kove saw an opportunity to revive his company and began producing plastic model kits under the name Airfix. The first Airfix model kits were released in 1949, and they included a range of aircraft, ships, and military vehicles. The kits were originally marketed as toys for children, but they quickly gained popularity among adults who were interested in building detailed scale models.

One of the factors that contributed to Airfix's success was the fact that their kits were affordable and easy to assemble. In addition, the company invested heavily in creating detailed and accurate models, which appealed to hobbyists who were looking for a challenge. As a result, Airfix quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of plastic model kits in the UK.

In the 1960s, Airfix expanded their product line to include models of cars, trains, and even space vehicles. They also introduced a range of diorama accessories, which allowed hobbyists to create detailed scenes for their models. By the 1970s, Airfix had become a global brand, with distributors in Europe, North America, and Asia.

In the 1980s, Airfix faced increased competition from other manufacturers, and they struggled to keep up with changing consumer trends. In 1981, the company was acquired by Humbrol, a UK-based company that produced model paints and other accessories. Under Humbrol's ownership, Airfix continued to produce new kits and expand their product line.

In 2006, Hornby plc, a UK-based toy and model train company, acquired both Airfix and Humbrol. Since then, Airfix has continued to release new kits and expand their product line. They have also embraced new technologies, such as 3D printing, to create more detailed and accurate models.

Today, Airfix remains one of the leading brands in the plastic model kit industry. Their kits are popular among hobbyists of all ages, and they continue to innovate and push the boundaries of what is possible with scale models. Despite the challenges they have faced over the years, Airfix's commitment to quality and innovation has ensured that they remain a beloved brand among hobbyists around the world.
