The Airfix A02070A 1/72 Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat was the backbone of the US Navy's carrier-based fighter aircraft at the outbreak of World War II. With its distinctively short and stocky appearance, the Wildcat had been developed as part of a successful range of pre-war biplanes and was already in service with the US Navy when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. By the time of the crucial battles for Midway and Guadalcanal, the F4F-4 model had become the most numerous variant, and new tactics enabled American naval and marine pilots to gain the upper hand on the previously all-conquering Mitsubishi Zero. The box contains 58 pieces of sprues and decals to assemble the model in 1:72 scale, and it measures 12.2 cm in length, 4.97 cm in height, and 16 cm in width. The manufacturer has obtained a license from Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation to produce the model, and the contents are made of plastic. There are two scheme options included in the box, one representing the F4F-4 Wildcat flown by the United States Navy's VF-41 on USS Ranger during Operation "torch" in the Atlantic Ocean in November 1942, and the other depicting the F4F-4 Wildcat aircraft flown by First Lieutenant James E Swett, VMF-221 Marine air group 12, US Marine Corps, during the battle of Guadalcanal in 1943. The model is rated as Skill Level 2 and takes only 1 flying hour to complete.
