The ED75-700 series was introduced in 1971 and was equipped with salt damage countermeasures for use on the Ou Main Line and Uetsu Main Line along the Japan Sea coast.
Most of the vehicles inherited by JR East at the time of privatization have already been retired due to the abolition of passenger trains.
The Akita Rolling Stock Center still has ED75-700 series after the 2000s, and in addition to construction and special trains, they also pulled some freight trains until 2008.
