The 201 series is a commuter train that appeared in 1979. It was the first JNR train to adopt armature chopper control. The front design was revamped from previous trains, with black steel panels around the front windows as an accent.
Trains that operated on the Chuo Line were fitted with skirts and plug-in type displays, and automatic coupling and uncoupling devices were installed on the leading cars in the middle to speed up coupling and merging. In later years, the plug-in type displays on the leading cars at both ends of the train were replaced with illuminated type displays.
Trains entering west of Takao were fitted with PS24 pantographs with low folding height to pass through tunnels with small cross sections. The trains ceased operation on the Chuo Line in October 2010.
