The F-35B Lightning II is the world's first supersonic short take-off/vertical landing (STOVL) stealth fighter. Developed for the US Marine Corps, it features a rotating engine duct nozzle and lift fan enabling vertical landing — a capability unique among supersonic aircraft. With a top speed of Mach 1.6, advanced radar-absorbing stealth technology, and internal weapons bays, the F-35B combines agility with low observability. Following the US, UK, and Italy, Japan's Air Self-Defense Force also selected the F-35B in 2019.
