Recommended Masking Tape

Precise masking is essential for the S13's two-tone body and fine window trim work. The AK Interactive range covers everything from broad body panels down to tight curves and pillars.

AK Interactive Standard Masking Tape (20m rolls)

  • 2mm – Window seals, fine trim lines
  • 3mm – Body panel edges, door shut lines
  • 5mm – General masking, two-tone dividing lines
  • 12mm – Broad coverage, bumper and lower body masking
  • 18mm – Large panel coverage and overspray protection

AK Interactive Blue Masking Tape for Curves

  • 1mm – Tight radius curves, headlight surrounds
  • 2mm – Body crease lines and curved trim edges
  • 3mm – Wheel arch lips, curved panel transitions
  • 6mm – Windscreen and rear glass surrounds
  • 10mm – Wider curved sections, roof panel edges

Model-Specific Painting Tips

1. Nailing the Two-Tone Body Trim

The S13 Silvia is famous for its OEM two-tone factory color schemes (such as Lime Green over Dark Grey or Warm White over Gold/Grey).

Order matters: Always spray the lighter top color first, let it cure completely (24–48 hours), then mask it off using high-quality Tamiya masking tape before spraying the darker lower tone.

Burnish the edges: Use a wooden toothpick or soft cotton swab to press down the tape along body crease lines to prevent bleed-through.

2. Window Frame Masking (X-18 Semi-Gloss Black)

S13 window trims have thin black borders around the clear glass and body pillars. Mask off the clear window parts from the inside and outside, leaving only the trim edge exposed. Airbrush or spray light coats of X-18 Semi-Gloss Black. Removing the tape while the paint is slightly tacky leaves sharp, clean lines.

3. Clear Lamp Details (Quad Headlights & Tail Lights)

Paint the chrome headlight buckets behind the clear lenses with X-11 Chrome Silver so they reflect light realistically. Apply X-26 Clear Orange and X-27 Clear Red onto the inside surface of the clear lens parts rather than the outside. This gives a deep, realistic glass effect.

4. Interior Fabric & Dash Finish

The S13 bucket seats and dash benefit from a completely matte finish. Mix a drop of XF-1 Flat Black into XF-53 Neutral Grey for realistic two-tone cloth interior trim. Apply a very light coat of flat clear over the seats to eliminate any plastic shine.

5. Primer & Polish for Paint Finish

Plastic molded in green can bleed color into light topcoats. Apply a fine coat of Tamiya Fine Surface Primer L before your topcoats — Light Gray is the recommended choice for this kit as it gives the most neutral base under both light and dark topcoats. Also available in White, Pink, and Oxide Red for different finishing preferences. Once your body paint and clear coat are fully dry, work through the Tamiya Polishing Compound range in sequence — Coarse to remove surface imperfections, Fine to refine the surface, then Finish for a deep mirror gloss.
