The Tamiya 61111 1/48 Scale Avro Lancaster B Mk.III Special "Dambuster" / B Mk.I Special "Grand Slam Bomber" is a model kit that replicates two of the RAF's most famous WWII aircraft modifications. The Avro Lancaster was a highly successful aircraft design that was modified to conduct special missions. One of the most famous of these was the mission to destroy hydroelectric dams that powered Germany's main industrial region. Sir Barnes Wallis created a bomb that would skip across the surface of the dam's reservoir, sink next to the dam wall, then explode to breech the dam with its shock waves. 19 Lancasters were modified to carry this special bomb, and these "Dambusters" conducted a successful attack on three of the dams on May 17, 1943. The other modification included the use of Lancasters nicknamed "Grand Slam Bombers" that were used to carry the largest conventional bombs of WWII, the "Grand Slam." These bombs were dropped from high altitudes and penetrated deep into the target before exploding, destroying it with earthquake-like shocks. They were used against fortified structures such as U-boat pens and railroad bridges. The kit includes parts to depict either a Lancaster B. Mk.III Special "Dambuster" or a Lancaster B Mk.I Special "Grand Slam Bomber" in 1/48 scale. It features a length of 443mm and a wingspan of 648mm, and the interiors of the cockpit, gun turrets, and bomb bay have fine details. The nose and tail turrets are movable, and the parts for two Merlin engines are included, with cowlings that can be detached to showcase them even after assembly. The landing gear's slick tires feature realistic weighted effects, and the kit comes with marking options for two Dambuster and one Grand Slam Bomber.
