During the 1920s and 1930s, the Red Army experienced a rapid growth in terms of expanding its ranks and increasing its technical weaponry, particularly armored weapons. Nonetheless, the infantry remained the primary and largest component of the Red Army. The substantial quantitative development of this type of weapon started in the late 1920s and early 1930s. By 1939, even before the aggression against Poland, the Soviet infantry had been organized into 173 divisions (called rifle divisions), with most of them grouped into 43 corps. This number increased further after the September campaign in 1939. The Soviet rifle division in 1941 consisted of three rifle regiments, an artillery regiment, an anti-tank and anti-aircraft artillery division, as well as reconnaissance and communication battalions, totaling about 14,500 personnel. However, significant changes occurred by 1945, resulting in a division of approximately 11,500-12,000 people, comprising three infantry regiments, an artillery brigade with three regiments, a self-propelled artillery squadron, and various support units, such as anti-tank, anti-aircraft weapons, and communications. The presence of machine weapons in infantry units also significantly increased, including the use of submachine guns such as the APsZ 41 and later the APsZ 43.
