The Boeing B-29 Superfortress is one of the most iconic and recognizable bombers in history. Originally developed at the start of WW2 as a very long rang heavy bomber the United States felt it would need should a conflict breakout between them and Japan in the vast reaches of the Pacific. It had a long and troubled development before the first flight in 1942 and around 4000 aircraft in several versions would be produced until 1946 with many being used for various purposes including aircraft refueler and testbeds after WW2, all the way into 1960.

Perhaps the B-29s most infamous achievement was when a B-29A nicknamed Enola Gay after it's pilots mother dropped the first Atomic bomb in anger on Hiroshima on August the 6th 1945. Soon after on August 8th a second B-29A named Bock's Car dropped a Nuclear bomb near the city of Nagasaki. Both aircraft have been preserved in several museums in the States and no aircraft has dropped an atomic or nuclear bomb in anger since.

The B-29 was the most advanced bomber of its day with remote control turrets, fully pressurised crew compartments and the most powerful radial engines of WW2. The B-29 and its program would lay the foundations for the first truly modern passenger aircraft, a huge success for Boeing who would go on to make some of the worlds most important aircraft.
