Recommended Masking Tape

The Evo VI's two-tone body, fine window trims, and bumper grilles demand precise masking. The AK Interactive range covers everything from broad panel lines down to tight curves and pillars.

AK Interactive Standard Masking Tape (20m rolls)

  • 2mm – Window seals and fine trim lines
  • 3mm – Body panel edges and door shut lines
  • 5mm – General masking and two-tone dividing lines
  • 12mm – Broad coverage, bumper and lower body masking
  • 18mm – Large panel coverage and overspray protection

AK Interactive Blue Masking Tape for Curves

  • 1mm – Tight radius curves and headlight surrounds
  • 2mm – Body crease lines and curved trim edges
  • 3mm – Wheel arch lips and curved panel transitions
  • 6mm – Windscreen and rear glass surrounds
  • 10mm – Wider curved sections and roof panel edges

Step-by-Step Painting Guide

1. Preparation & Priming

Cut parts from the sprues using precision cutters and smooth away any injection nubs using fine sanding sticks. Wash the plastic assemblies in warm, soapy water to remove mould-release oils. Apply a thin, even coat of Tamiya Fine Surface Primer L (Grey) or White to all parts to reveal surface imperfections and give the paint a strong base to grip onto.

2. Painting the Exterior Body Shell

Spray 2–3 light mist coats of your chosen body colour (e.g. TS-26 Pure White), followed by one wet coat for a glossy shine. Allow 15 minutes between coats and let the body cure fully for 24–48 hours before applying waterslide decals. Seal the decals and paint with TS-13 Clear for a protective, deep gloss automotive finish.

3. Masking & Windows

Use the included window masks to protect the clear glass parts. Spray or brush X-18 Semi-Gloss Black around the inner window borders to replicate the factory black ceramic trim. Use fine masking tape on the dried body to paint the exterior window frames and front bumper grilles with X-18.

4. Chassis & Undercarriage

Paint the main floor pan chassis using XF-24 Dark Grey or your matching exterior body colour. Pick out details with XF-16 Flat Aluminium for the transmission case, XF-56 Metallic Grey for the brake rotors, and X-7 Red for the iconic Brembo brake calipers.

5. Cockpit & Interior Detailing

Paint the main dashboard and door panels in X-18 Semi-Gloss Black. The Evo VI Recaro bucket seats call for a dual-tone finish: paint the outer frames XF-24 Dark Grey and the inner cushion fabric segments XF-8 Flat Blue (or XF-1 Flat Black for a blacked-out look). Finish the gear shifter and pedals with X-11 Chrome Silver.
